Don Quixote embodies the ideal and abstract values: he represents the ideal side of existence, which is constantly defeated by the realistic side, yet the struggle between these two sides persists, unweakened by the reality's continuous triumph over the ideal. Thus arises this living dialectic represented by the two opposing figures of the knight Don Quixote and his squire Sancho Panza. Therefore, the story of Don Quixote is the story of existence itself with its conflicting, clashing, and competing poles; from their conflict arises the dialectic of existence. Don Quixote's character stands among the highest human archetypes, alongside Prometheus, Faust, Hamlet, and Don Juan. Indeed, Don Quixote represents the human spirit, while his companion Sancho Panza represents the human body, the true companion of the spirit.
