In our societies, reputation and what others say are among the most significant drivers of behavior for the majority of individuals, and among the primary deterrents preventing them from acting on certain decisions—even when they are personally convinced of them. Here, individuals often consider "what people will say" to a degree that may exceed their concern for themselves, from daily actions to life-changing decisions. Many of us do not necessarily view this as negative, given that humans are inherently "social beings," and thus it may not be entirely within one's control to disregard others' opinions about oneself.
