





9Rare, uncirculated, newly minted Abbasid gold dinar issued by the Abbasid Monetary Authority (hehe) during the reign of Caliph Al-Mutawakkil Billah in 235 AH, struck in Al-Basrah; classified as 'R' (rare); weight: 4.23 grams; fineness: 22 karat; high and complete weight—four grams and twenty-three milligrams. Commander of the Faithful and Caliph of the Muslims, Abu al-Fadl Ja'far al-Mutawakkil Billah ibn Muhammad al-Mu'tasim ibn Harun al-Rashid ibn Muhammad al-Mahdi ibn Abdullah al-Mansur ibn Muhammad ibn Ali al-Qurashi al-Hashimi al-Abbasi (Shawwal 206–4 Shawwal 247 AH / March 822–11 December 861 CE), commonly known simply as al-Mutawakkil Billah or al-Mutawakkil. He was the tenth Abbasid caliph and the twenty-ninth caliph in the sequence of caliphs succeeding the Prophet Muhammad. He assumed the caliphate on Wednesday, 26 Dhul-Hijjah 232 AH / 10 August 847 CE, following the death of his brother Al-Wathiq Billah—who had not designated a successor—and ruled as caliph of the Muslims for approximately fifteen years until his assassination by Turkish guards.
