Session 398: Sarcasm.. Between Philosophy and Literature

Agatha Christie is credited with saying: "I get the plots for my detective novels while washing dishes; because this silly task involuntarily drives you to think about murder." Have you ever laughed at a text or a poem, or felt that a philosopher was writing a joke? In this session, we will discuss what it means for sarcasm to sneak between the pages of a book, behind a philosopher's glasses, and even in our casual words and everyday situations. We will bring together Al-Jahiz, who mocks misers, and Nietzsche, who mocks existence, all the way to neighborhood jokes and social media. We will try to understand why we laugh in the first place..
