In our societies, reputation and what others say are among the most important drivers of behavior for the majority of individuals, and among the primary deterrents preventing them from acting on many decisions—even when they are personally convinced—because individuals among us consider "what people think" to a degree that may exceed their consideration of themselves, ranging from daily actions to life-changing decisions. Many of us do not necessarily view this as negative, given that humans are inherently "social beings," and thus have little control over being indifferent to others' opinions about them.
