They are strong, highly resilient, can get accustomed to their owner, take food from the hand, and may live up to three years (under suitable conditions and proper care). Their requirements are simple. It is best to provide hiding places in the tank. They cannot be kept with large or predatory fish but can be housed with small, fast-moving fish that swim at the top. They eat almost everything, including all types of fish and shrimp food, cucumber, leafy vegetables, and even dead fish. They also help clean the tank and live at the bottom, rarely swimming. They can be taken out of the tank for short periods without water, provided there is moisture, and they breathe directly from the air.
