In our societies, reputation and what others say are among the most important drivers of behavior for the majority of individuals, and among the main deterrents preventing them from acting in certain ways—even if they personally believe in those actions. Here, individuals often consider 'what people think' to a degree that may exceed their concern for themselves, ranging from daily behaviors to life-changing decisions. Many of us don't necessarily see this as negative, given that humans are inherently 'social beings,' and therefore, it's not entirely within their control to disregard others' opinions about them.
