Sciatica pain extends along the path of the sciatic nerve, usually starting from the lower back and spreading down through the buttocks, the back of the thigh, the calf, to the foot and its toes. This pain often affects only one side of the body (either the right or left leg) and is described as burning, sharp, or electric shock-like pain. Map of pain and symptom spread in detail: Lower back area: The starting point where inflammation or pressure on the nerve roots begins. Buttocks and hips: The patient feels heaviness or deep pain in the back of the pelvis. Back of the thigh: The pain extends as a longitudinal line directly down the back of the thigh. Calf: The pain moves to the back of the leg, sometimes accompanied by muscle cramps. Foot and toes: The end of the nerve's path, where numbness, tingling, coldness, or heat may appear.
