The quail is the bird commonly known as the quail or coturnix. The quail ("salwa") is mentioned in three verses of the Holy Quran: "And We shaded you with clouds, and sent down to you manna and quails: 'Eat of the good things We have provided for you.' And they did not wrong Us, but they were wronging themselves." Surah Al-Baqarah, Verse 57. Also: "And We divided them into twelve tribes as nations; and We revealed to Moses, when his people asked him for water, 'Strike the rock with your staff,' and there gushed forth from it twelve springs; each tribe knew its drinking place. And We shaded them with clouds, and sent down upon them manna and quails: 'Eat of the good things We have provided for you.' And they did not wrong Us, but they were wronging themselves." Surah Al-A'raf, Verse 160. And: "O Children of Israel! We delivered you from your enemy, and appointed a tryst with you on the right side of Mount Tur, and sent down upon you manna and quails."
