Understanding Tawhid and Its Major Categories

Definition of Tawhid

  • Meaning of Tawhid in language: Derived from the word "wahada," meaning to make something one.[1]
  • As for the legal meaning of Tawhid, it is: Affirming Allah's exclusive right to divinity, lordship, names, and attributes.[1]

Imam Ibn al-Qayyim -may Allah have mercy on him- defined Tawhid by saying: (Tawhid is not merely affirming that there is no creator except Allah, or that Allah is Lord of all things and their Sovereign, as idol worshippers acknowledged this while remaining polytheists. Rather, Tawhid involves loving Allah, submitting to Him, humbling oneself before His door, complete obedience to His commands, sincere worship directed solely to Him, seeking His pleasure in all words and deeds, and aligning one’s will—whether in giving or withholding, loving or hating—with His divine purpose, thus distancing oneself from anything that leads to sin or encourages its persistence).[1]

The tawhid of the heart entails true knowledge of what Tawhid means, including both negation and affirmation. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: (Whoever says: "There is no god but Allah," and rejects all that is worshipped besides Allah, his wealth, blood, and account are protected by Allah).[2][1]

Categories of Tawhid

Islamic scholars from the mainstream tradition divided Tawhid into three categories based on deep study of Quranic verses and Prophetic traditions. This classification was previously discussed by early scholars such as Abu Ja'far al-Tabari and Ibn Abd al-Barr, refuting claims by some innovators who falsely attributed this division to Ibn Taymiyyah. The three categories are:[3]

  • Tawhid of Lordship

Lordship comes from the root "Rabb," meaning the exclusive right of Allah to create, own, and manage all affairs. There is no creator in existence other than Allah, no sovereign over the universe except Him, and no one else who directs the affairs of creation and the cosmos. He is the One who provides sustenance, gives life and takes it away. It should be noted that disbelievers acknowledged this form of Tawhid. Allah says: (And if you ask them who created the heavens and the earth and made the sun and moon subservient, they would surely say: "Allah.")[4]

Although the disbeliever acknowledges that Allah is the Creator and Sovereign of the universe, this acknowledgment alone does not guarantee salvation from Hellfire, nor does it make one a Muslim if it is not accompanied by the declaration of Tawhid: "There is no god but Allah," and the recognition that none deserves worship except Him. This type of Tawhid concerns cosmic realities.

  • Tawhid of Divinity

Divinity stems from the word "Ilah," and this form of Tawhid is realized through exclusively directing acts of worship—such as supplication, reliance, and seeking help—to Allah alone, with no partner. This is the very essence of the message sent by Allah through His messengers, which disbelievers denied throughout history.

Allah says: (And We sent a messenger to every nation: "Worship Allah and avoid false deities." Some were guided by Allah, and others fell into misguidance. So travel across the land and observe how the deniers met their end.)[5]. This category is directly linked to Islamic commands and prohibitions.

  • Tawhid of Names and Attributes

This involves believing in all the names and attributes of Allah mentioned in the Quran and authentic Sunnah, affirming their perfection without distortion or denial. This includes accepting these attributes exactly as revealed, without likening them to human traits.

Among the names of Allah affirmed in the Quran and the Sunnah are:

  • The name Al-Qawi, reflecting the attribute of strength.
  • The name Al-Aziz, reflecting the attribute of honor and power.
  • The name Al-Karim, reflecting the attribute of generosity. Allah says: (The Originator of the heavens and the earth! He has made for you mates from among yourselves and from livestock, too, to multiply you through them. Nothing is like Him; and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing.)[6]

Relationship Between the Three Categories of Tawhid

These three categories together constitute belief in Allah. Their relationship is complementary—belief in one cannot substitute for another. True Tawhid of Lordship cannot exist without Tawhid of Divinity, and vice versa. [7]

Any flaw in any one of these categories undermines the entire concept of Tawhid. Whoever believes in the Lordship of Allah—that He is One, free from partners or offspring—must necessarily conclude that He alone deserves worship. Since He is the true God, it is impermissible to worship anyone else. [7] Allah says: (O people! Worship your Lord, the One who created you and those before you, so that you may become righteous. Who made the earth a resting place and the sky a canopy, and sent down rain from the sky to produce fruits as sustenance for you. Do not set up equals to Allah, knowing full well what you do.)[8]

Tawhid of Names and Attributes encompasses both Tawhid of Lordship and Tawhid of Divinity, grounded in the exclusive attribution of all divine names and perfect attributes to Allah alone. [7]

Importance of Tawhid

Allah commanded His servants to uphold Tawhid throughout the Quran, and the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) spent twenty-three years calling his people to the worship of Allah alone. Tawhid is a fundamental right of Allah over His servants and all humanity, requiring devotion to Him alone through supplication, fear, hope, and all forms of worship. [9]

People must strictly avoid invoking the dead, saints, or prophets at gravesites. Worship is an umbrella term for all words and actions that please and are acceptable to Allah. From Noah to Muhammad (peace be upon them), all messengers were sent with the call to Tawhid. [9]

Humanity was created for the purpose of Tawhid. The deeper a servant’s knowledge of Allah, the more complete his worship becomes. True worship is impossible without Tawhid. Tawhid is the innate nature (fitrah) that Allah created humans upon. Only those whose fitrah is corrupted by external influences deviate from it. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: (Every child is born upon the natural disposition; then his parents turn him into a Jew, Christian, or Magian—like how a beast gives birth to a young one. Do you see any of them born without defects?)[10]

Satan’s deception can distort human nature from its original path of Tawhid. Yet Tawhid remains the core of fitrah, while shirk is clearly contrary to sound nature and reason. Tawhid is essential for victory, empowerment, security, guidance, and distinction between believer and disbeliever. It is a prerequisite for entering Paradise and escaping the punishment of Hell.
