The Emirate of Sharjah is the third largest in the United Arab Emirates, covering an area of 2,600 square kilometers (1,000 square miles). Approximately 75% of its population resides in its capital city, also named Sharjah, located on the Arabian Gulf coast north of Dubai. Sharjah also includes three coastal outlying regions in the east along the Gulf of Oman: Dibba, Khorfakan, and Kalba. This unique configuration makes Sharjah the only emirate among the seven that shares borders with all other emirates.[1]
The United Arab Emirates consists of seven emirates: Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras Al Khaimah, Sharjah, and Umm Al Quwain. Each emirate’s administrative center is located in its capital city, which bears the same name. Abu Dhabi is the largest emirate by area, accounting for over 86% of the country’s total landmass. Dubai and Sharjah follow as the second and third largest. The table below outlines the ranking of the seven emirates by size:[2]
